Bahamas Airlines >>>
TO & WITHIN the Bahamas

Find the most popular Bahamas airlines to and from the major destinations. Comparing what is on offer and who is actually in business, seems to be two different pair of shoes.

My wife and I live on Eleuthera, an Out-Island in the Bahamas. We've had our own experiences while traveling the country. And we found that airport car renters and foreign residents are the best informed people when it comes to Bahamas airlines into and from the destinations below. We spoke with them and checked out the airlines ourselves.

Here are our recommendations, last updated in Sept., 2009:

TO the Bahamas FROM North America

For flights to Nassau on New Providence island and Freeport on Grand Bahama island...

Use the big US carriers.

Try The Best Low-Cost
Travel Search Tool

Kayak has been called the Google of Travel Sites because it is so easy to use. And it consistently returns the lowest fares. Kayak also redirects you to an airline's site, so you can book directly and collect mileage points.

In short: KAYAK is the most accurate and free search engine out there for lowest airfares.

Flying in from Europe?

The only available direct flight from Europe to Nassau is operated from London by:

British Airways

From the US To Island Destinations Below Use...

Carriers Indicated by the following links:

TO...

  • Marsh Harbour (MHH) on Abaco:
  • American Eagle from Miami or...

Continental from Miami, Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach, or...

Bahamasair (not the world's most reliable airline) from West Palm Beach.

    TO...

  • North Eleuthera (ELH):
  • Continental from Ft. Lauderdale international airport

    Lynx Air or...

Twin Air from Fort Lauderdale, a five minutes taxi ride from the main airport.

    TO...

  • Central Eleuthera = Governor's Harbour (GHB):
  • Continental from Miami or... Ft. Lauderdale international airport or...

Twin Air from their terminal near Fort Lauderdale's intern. airport. It's five minutes by taxi from the main airport. Be sure you have TwinAir's address ready (from their home page) to show to the taxi driver. For reservations and inquiries, call them rather than e-mail.

Bahamas Airlines Operating WITHIN the Bahamas

Bahamasair is the national carrier of the Bahamas. All flights go through the Nassau hub on New Providence island. There are hardly any direct flights from "island to island".

To get an idea of all the national Bahamasair destinations, click the above link. Click on roundtrip and search for destinations within the Bahamas if you are interested in island hopping.

Southern Air is BahamasAir's small competitor but often more reliable with regards to scheduled times. Click the above SA link to book online.

    FROM...

  • Marsh Harbour (MHH) on Abaco Island:
  • Abaco Air: Their high wing planes for scheduled and chartered flights are great. They allow you the most beautiful view of huge natural water color paintings while flying over shallow Bahamian waters.

The satellite photo below gives just a faint impression of what's awaiting you.

    FROM...

  • Freeport (FPO) on Grand Bahama island
  • or...

  • North Eleuthera (ELH)
  • or...

  • Central Eleuthera's airport Governor's Harbour (GHB)...
  • ...

Fly either of these two airlines:

    Bahamasair

    or...

Southern Air. We prefer Southern Air.

The links to these airlines are just above.

You could also try a charter like Yellow Air Taxi who are an on-demand carrier that operates out of Fort Lauderdale. See their destinations by clicking the Yellow Air Taxi link above.

    Unusual Travel Idea

Most tourists do not use Bahamas airlines because they go straight to their destination Nassau or Freeport and stay there for a week or so.
    But...

    How about this?

From the US, fly to Abaco, a group of islands and a real boater's paradise. The Abaco capital is Marsh Harbour (airport code MHH). Rent a boat and tour the nearby small and very pretty islands.

For bookings on Abaco Air click the respective link above.

Or fly to North Eleuthera (ELH) and visit charming and well developed Harbour Island. Then continue by plane or fast ferry to Nassau.
