This Eleuthera Rental Cottage Offers...
... a cozy atmosphere. Two bedrooms, one bath and a large living area. And this Eleuthera rental cottage is just one minute by foot from one of the most beautiful pink sand beaches on the island. Best of all, the chances are you'll have it to yourself. As you can see in the aerial photos below, there is only one house near our Eleuthera rental cottage. My wife and I live in an octagonal home, which is screened from the cottage by trees and bushes. Help and assistance are always available, but you won't see us unless you want to. Orchid rental cottage has a wonderful feeling of privacy.

This is a view of Banana Beach to the North. We are from Switzerland. Many of our guests, who come from the U.S., Canada and Europe, consider our area and our beach the most beautiful on the island. Your Eleuthera rental is shown on the aerial photos below. We live in the round house next to it. The first aerial was taken in March of 2004 after a drought. Normally the grassland is much greener here. And BTW, in 2010 there is still the same number of houses.

Notice the few homes on this long stretch of beach? It's a wide beach with fine pink sand, ideal for strolling, swimming, beach combing or just lounging in the sun. And if you like to jog, do so on the charming sandy road extending for 3 miles (4.8 km) all the way south to Club Med Beach, a.k.a. French Leave Beach. On Eleuthera you won't find another location with foot paths along the water and through the bush like this. Enjoy great fishing and snorkeling right from our shore below.

Above is an aerial view of approximately one third of the total length of our beach. That's right, just a third. The beach is 1.7 miles long with only a house here and there. There's a new restaurant (June 2009) within 10 minutes beach walking distance from our Eleuthera rental cottage. Its name is Bistro which is part of Sky Beach Club resort, located on the cove in the upper left of the above picture. The comfortable Bistro restaurant and its swim-up bar are both open to the public. The Atlantic side, where your Eleuthera rental is located, is generally cooler than the other side of Eleuthera. We're enjoying the benefit of the famous Bahamas breeze here. Many would agree that the Atlantic is the more scenic of our two oceans, and has the best of
Eleuthera's sandy beaches
as well.
Eleuthera rental cottage "Orchid" was designed in the traditional Bahamian style.
It is conveniently located between the town of Governor's Harbour and Governor's Harbour airport GHB. There is no audible aircraft noise at the cottage. You won't even hear a sound from the main road, which is over a quarter mile away. Enjoy the awe-inspiring moments of gazing at the stars in the total silence of night.

Eleuthera rental *Orchid* is ideal for a couple looking for a quiet spot in a pleasant environment or for a family with 1-2 children. The large and breezy front porch is a favorite spot for relaxing and enjoying the view. There's an outdoor shower right beside it - another favorite feature of Orchid rental cottage. The front door takes you into the living room, which has a dining area and an open kitchen shown in the photos below. There is no TV but we do have a large portable radio and CD player. Bring your notebook computer to watch DVDs and handle your e-mail by using our WiFi DSL connection which most of the time can be used for international calls via Skype. But...
The Haynes library in Governor's Harbour has high-speed Internet access via cable
and is equipped with modern computers where you can retrieve and send e-mail or surf the Web for 5 US$ per hour. There's a phone in the house. All calls on Eleuthera are free. For calls to other Bahamian islands or for international calls, a phone card is available from Batelco or the ESSO station in Governor's Harbour. Eleuthera rental Orchid is just a ten-minute drive from Governor's Harbour where you'll find
liquor and grocery stores.
Governor's or *The Harbour* as the locals call it, is the main settlement in Central Eleuthera. It's a quaint Bahamian town with 2 large food stores, 2 gas stations and 2 banks - the Royal Bank of Canada and the First Caribbean Bank. There is also a travel agency in Governor's Harbour called Destinations, phone 1-242-332-2720. Open Mon-Fr 9-5 and Fri 9-1.

The fully equipped kitchen has a... - microwave
- fridge with deep freezer
- clothes washer
- blender
- cooler
- coffee maker
- toaster
As there's no public transport system, you will need a rental car to explore the island, or go to the
restaurants in and around Governor's Harbour - click here to see them listed with phone numbers.
For car rentals we recommend friendly Mr. McClain Pinder. His mobile phone is 1-242-557-7966 and his e-mail address is mcclain_pinder-[at]-yahoo.com -- replace -[at]- with @ McClain's rates are... US$60/day for a 1-5 day rental and $50/day for a full week; small SUV $70/day for 1-5 days, and $60/day for a full week. It's better to call him rather than e-mail. McClain accepts credit cards. A 5% bank charge is added to cc payments but you can pay cash, too. The living room of our Eleuthera rental cottage faces north. That means the porch is particularly pleasant during afternoons when the sun is behind the house.

There are two small double bedrooms of equal size, one with a king size bed - shown above - and the other one with two single beds. Each room has air-conditioning and a ceiling fan. Linens are provided as well as beach chairs and a sun shade. All you have to bring are your own beach towels.Would you like to book this Eleuthera rental? If so, take a look at the availability calendar. It's right after the rental rates below. Then scroll to the bottom where you can write to the owners by typing into the empty form.
Let's now walk to the beach, barefoot or with your Crocs. (BTW, we consider them the best island shoes >> http://tinyurl.com/zp6jq ) The beach is only a minute away from Orchid Eleuthera rental. Here's the sandy footpath over the little dune which protects us from the pounding noise on those occasions when the sea is rough.
Our Beach... No, Yours!
Here we are at the pink-sand beach we like so much. How do you like it?

Once on the beach, walk for almost a mile in either direction. It's all powdery pink-sand. Beautiful! And excellent for swimming, fishing and snorkeling, too.

You will most enjoy walking Banana Beach at low tide. We always keep an actual tide chart ready for you.

Here we are about a quarter mile south of our beach. After a long walk or swim, you'll enjoy our tiki hut built in April 09 by my nephew (in the picture below). Right next to our beach access path, it easily accommodates four persons. And the view from there is magnificent. Why not take the cooler to the beach and read your book in the full shade of our tiki hut?

Another Advantage...
If it's too windy at Banana Beach, hop into your rental car, drive north for less than 10 minutes and enjoy the calm
Alabaster Bay.
What Our Guests Say...
Here's an article "Magic moments at "our" Eleuthera rental cottage and on the beaches" by Tanis and her family from Ottawa (Clicking this link opens a new window. You'll be right back here when you close it.)
Steve & Jana Bailey (Dec. 09), Connecticut, USA, stephenbailey [at] earthlink.net We have visited eight Caribbean Islands in recent years and our stay in Orchard Cottage was one of our best vacations ever. Dieter's website - the one you are reading right now - provides a complete and accurate description of the cottage and the island. If you like what you see on the website, you will love what you find in real life. That applies both to the cottage and to the island. We ate at several of the restaurants listed on the website. Almost every restaurant we visited had a fabulous on-the-beach location with a picture-postcard view. Our favorite restaurant by far was Cocodimama (which fortunately is also one of the closest to Orchard Cottage). Everything we ate there was excellent and they really know how to cook their pasta. ************************************* Nikki, Minnesota, USA, (Sept. 09), misty1271[at] msn.com Eleuthera rental cottage Orchid is a wonderful home to stay in. We enjoyed our stay here very much. The hosts Dieter and Gerda are extremely friendly and helpful. If we get the pleasure of coming back someday we will be staying in Orchid Cottage. ************************************* Val Nathan & Edris (April 09 and April 08), 1193 Munro St., Victoria, B.C. V9A 5P5, Canada. Phone: (250) 380-65-18 We hesitate to recommend the Orchid Cottage because we would like to have it available to us, exclusively, for the rest of our lives. However, one must admit that the Orchid Cottage was delightful, spotlessly clean, comfortable and very welcoming - and we so enjoyed Roxy, the affectionate island dog, who arrived promptly most mornings for a pat and a piece of cheese. And as for Eleuthera - well, you'd have to be nuts not to love it. Paradise! Thank you to our lovely hosts Dieter and Gerda for a wonderful stay. ************************************* Fritz Fischer & Lindsay Spenceley (Dec. 08), 1262 Armour Road, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. fritzfischer [at] hotmail.com We had a really amazing time in Eleuthera and at the Orchid cottage. We will do our best to get back next year and if that doesn't work, we'll be back the year after. It was a pleasure meeting you and we greatly appreciated your hospitality, Gerda's baked goods and the great, spotless cottage. We'll be seeing you soon, FOR SURE. ************************************* The Langloys family (August 06 and August 07 and August 09), 16 av Saint Charles, 06400 CANNES, FRANCE. Translation: Our family of four - from the South of France - has spent three times three weeks in Gerda and Dieter's Eleuthera rental cottage in August of 2006, August 2007 and August 2009. Three weeks of freedom, relaxation and tranquility that made us forget the constraints and the stress of everyday life. Our discovery of Eleuthera, its spectacular and incredibly pristine beaches were part of our enjoyment. But on top of that there was the kindness of our hosts Gerda & Dieter as well as the comfort of their cottage. All of this added up to an excellent vacation. We only have one desire... to return to that same place next year!

Air Travel from the US & Canada to Governor's Harbour
Most travelers must make a connection in South Florida. If that's you, I suggest you fly to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Florida - rather than to Miami. Since the end of 2009 however, there's a direct American Airlines connection from Miami to Governor's Harbour. From FLL continue on to Governor's Harbour (GHB) in Central Eleuthera via Continental, Lynx Air or Twin Air, because going through Nassau can be a hassle. But... Flying in via Nassau (NAS) is generally cheaper. From NAS to GHB use Southern Air rather than Bahamas Air. Southern Air operate 3 daily flights from NAS to GHB. Once you get to GHB, tell any taxi driver to bring you to Orchid cottage at the end of Banana Beach road. I do not recommend flying into North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) because it is about an hour north of Orchid rental cottage. The taxi ride is about US$100 one way. From GHB airport to this Eleuthera rental cottage it's only 10 minutes by taxi. For more information about
air travel to Eleuthera, please read my page by clicking here.
And for cheapest possible flights, use the excellent KAYAK travel search engine on the above air-travel-to-Eleuthera page.
