One of Eleuthera's Really Great Beaches is Poponi Beach...

... where you'll find a few restaurants. But Poponi Beach - also known as Singing Sands beach - is not so well known. Ask locals where it is and they'll look puzzled at you although this beach is quite easy to find.

Clear directions and a map are at the end of this page.

Just like Club Med beach in Governor's Harbour, Poponi Beach is on the Atlantic side. It has lots of trees, so there's shade when you need it.

Even though Poponi is on the Atlantic side, the water remains fairly calm. Go ahead, jump in and enjoy a swim. The turquoise and blue colors of the shallow water are spectacular.

And bring your snorkel gear. Check out the rocky areas but be sure to do your snorkeling on a calm day.

We like Poponi beach in North Palmetto Point for long walks.

At the access point turn left and go north. You can walk up to 4 miles until you reach Club Med Beach across from Governor's Harbour.

After a short distance you'll see Captain Jack's Beachside Restaurant with its shaded outside bar and sun deck. Scroll to the top of this page where Captain Jack's is visible on the right side of the aerial photo.

Use the salt rinsing shower by the beach access stairs and enjoy a drink from the bar with its spectacular view.

At Captain Jack's, Poponi Beach turns into *Singing Sands* Beach. Where does that strange name come from?... It's on an old Eleuthera map that was produced by the former British rulers.

The Singing Sands Beach Club is being built right behind Captain Jack's restaurant.

Here is the view from the restaurant.

========== SIDEBAR ==========

We know Judy who is very familiar with Eleuthera. Judy in Florida knows most Bahamas Beach House Rentals inside out. Click here to view photos and contact Judy directly.

She will find your ideal rental in the North Palmetto area. Quite a number of places are available there. Or ask her for other rentals in Eleuthera.

======= END OF SIDEBAR =======

There's a second restaurant on your way north, about 2/3 of the way from Poponi Beach to Club Med Beach... Tippy's restaurant and bar. It's everyone's favorite!

Three places where you can get refreshments... That's quite exceptional in Eleuthera, where beach bars do not abound. Well, not yet.

As you drive into the parking this is what you'll see.

On the beach turn right, i.e. south. One of the white spots in the photo below is Unique's Village 0.2 miles away...

unique hotel restaurant from poponi beach

Unique's is a small hotel, restaurant and bar. Have a drink on the covered porch of their octagonal restaurant.

On the wooden deck up the stairs, you'll enjoy a great view of the beach. At the bottom of the stairs notice the shower for salt rinsing.

Below is the left side of the beach - the northern side - as seen from the access path. We like to walk 1-2 hours all the way up to Club Med Beach across from Governor's Harbour.

washed out sand stone

Sometimes we see very unusual structures like these which are the result of the sea having washed away much of the sand. Don't worry, it'll come back... some day.

area shaded by rocks

In the afternoon Poponi Beach is well shaded, sometimes by trees or by rocks as you can see here.

Do go at low tide and click here to find out what time of the day that will be.

Silk cotton tree in North Palmetto Proceed for 0.8 miles to a T-junction. There's a huge silk cotton tree (photo to the right). Turn right and go 0.3 miles. Then turn left onto a dirt road that goes uphill. Continue on that dirt road for 0.1 miles to a small parking area at the beach.

Directions to Poponi Beach...
Coming From Tarpum Bay in The South

14.7 miles north of Ingraham Beach Inn which is on your left as you drive out of Tarpum Bay, turn right into Church Street. There is also the Unique Village Hotel sign pointing in your direction. The Poponi beach access road is only about half a mile before Unique Hotel.
