There are even two restaurants nearby, Tippy's and Unique Village. Poponi Beach is not so well known. Ask locals where it is and they'll look puzzled at you although this beach is quite easy to find.
Directions and a map are at the end of this page.
Just like Club Med beach in Governor's Harbour, Poponi Beach is on the Atlantic side. It has lots of trees, so there's shade when you need it.
The water remains fairly calm. Go ahead, jump in and enjoy a swim. The turquoise and blue colors of the shallow water are spectacular.
And bring your snorkel gear. Check out the rocky areas but be sure to do your snorkeling on a calm day.
We like Poponi in North Palmetto Point for long walks, up to 4 miles until we reach Club Med Beach, across from Governor's Harbour.
After a short distance you'll see Captain Jack's closed beach-side restaurant with its shaded outside bar and sun deck. Scroll to the top of this page where Captain Jack's is visible on the right side of the aerial photo.
At Captain Jack's, Poponi Beach turns into Singing Sands Beach. Where does that strange name come from?... It's on an old Eleuthera map which was produced by the former British rulers.
Here is the view from the closed restaurant.
========== SIDEBAR ==========
We know Judy who is very familiar with Eleuthera. Judy in Florida knows most
She will find your ideal rental in the North Palmetto area. Quite a number of places are available there. Or ask her for other rentals in Eleuthera.
========== END OF SIDEBAR ==========
There's a second restaurant on your way north, about 2/3 of the way from Poponi to Club Med Beach... Tippy's restaurant and bar. It's everyone's favorite!
Two places where you can get refreshments. Well, actually three if you include the Tapas Beach House Bar on nearby Club Med beach. That's quite exceptional for an Eleutheran beach, where bars do not abound.
As you drive into the parking, the above is what you'll see
On the beach turn right, i.e. south. One of the white spots in the photo below is the restaurant Unique's Village, 0.2 miles away...
Unique's is a small hotel, restaurant and bar. Have a drink on the covered porch of their octagonal restaurant.
On the wooden deck up the stairs, you'll enjoy a great view of the beach. At the bottom of the stairs notice the shower for salt rinsing.
Below is the left side of the beach - the northern side - as seen from the access path. We like to walk 1-2 hours all the way up to Club Med Beach across from Governor's Harbour.
Sometimes we see very unusual structures like these which are the result of the sea having washed away much of the sand. Don't worry, it will always come back.
In the afternoon Poponi Beach is well shaded, sometimes by trees or by rocks as you can see here.
I recommend you go at low tide. Click here to find out what time of the day that will be.
4.9 miles south of the Shell station in Governor's Harbour turn left into Church street. This is the main intersection right in between Palmetto Point North and Palmetto Point South. You will notice a store on either side of the main road.
Proceed for 0.8 miles to a T-junction. There's a huge silk cotton tree (photo to the right). Turn right and go 0.3 miles. Then turn left onto a dirt road that goes uphill. Continue on that dirt road for 0.1 miles to a small parking area at the beach.
14.7 miles north of Ingraham Beach Inn which is on your left as you drive out of Tarpum Bay, turn right into Church Street. There is also the Unique Village Hotel sign pointing in your direction. The Poponi access road is only about half a mile before Unique Hotel.
Proceed for 0.8 miles to a T-junction. There's a huge silk cotton tree - photo above - just to the left of it. Turn right and go 0.3 miles. Then turn left onto a dirt road that goes uphill. Continue on that dirt road for 0.1 miles to a small parking area at the beach.
Enjoy your day at Poponi Beach!
